Leadership starts in the home

Make Them Feel

I’ve learned that people will forget what you said,

People will forget what you did,

But people will never forget how you made them feel.

-Maya Angelou

People will never forget how you made them feel. This is my all-time favorite quote. Maya Angelou gives the basis of how we think about the need for leadership as a parent. Parent leadership is how you make those within your influence feel about themselves. How you empower others is parentship.

Think about those special people who have influenced your life. Most of the time, you don’t remember many of the things they said, but you can remember how they made you feel. Maybe they believed in you when no one else did. They made you feel that you were special and could take on the challenge before you.

Maybe they did all they could to make you feel safe. They sacrificed things in their own life to give you a place to come home to each day where you were sheltered from the world. Maybe they were with you step by step, giving you a push when you needed it to get you to the next step in your life.

This is what everyone needs in their homes—someone to make them feel something about themselves. As a parent leader, you are uniquely qualified to give those within your influence those feelings. They may forget what you said, they might not see what you do, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
