Find Your Leverage
Leverage the strength that you have; that no one else can be you. – Todd Wheatland
Great leaders know who they are and sometimes more importantly they know who they aren’t. One key to a great parent leader is they use their leverage. Leverage in its simplest form is using something to its maximum advantage. Where the magic happens is when you find your strength and use it to its full advantage.
In the book Good To Great by Jim Collins, he talks about this as the hedgehog principle. It is named after the hedgehog because Collins points out the hedgehog does one thing but he does it well. In fact, he does it better than any other animal. He is truly the best at what he does. This is what we need to find as parent leaders. We use our strengths to our advantage. You might be very patient and that is your strength. Do have a great ability to listen and you can use it to grow your relationships in your family?
It is up to you to work within your strengths. If you don’t know what your strength is take a few days to really think about areas you have found success in the past. What skills did you use to get you there? Ask those you are close with what they see as your strengths. Put them in place in your family and try them out. Trial and error is often a great way to understand where we can be great.
The secret of a parent leader is you always have a secret weapon where you know you can be the best. This should be the love you have for those you lead within your family. Only you can love them like a parent, spouse, or a member of the family. Parent leaders understand that love is the ultimate motivator for the parent and the family. Make sure you are the best in the world at loving those within your family. No one can do this better than you.
