Leaders Have Dirty Hands
Right now our family is in the middle of a process where we are trying to sell our house. If any of you have been through this before you know that you live in constant fear of two things. The first is you are going to get a call where you find out that someone is coming over to your house in 10 min to take a look. The second is your kids will actually be kids and get their toys out and get the house dirty.
It has been a real eye opener for us because there are times where we don’t feel like we live in our house but we are on display in our house. If there is one thing that this experience has taught me is that a little mess is okay. In fact, for a leader, a little dirt on your hands is essential for success. I use to worry so much about having things clean and put away that I forgot to realize that life is a little messy and that is a good thing.
I once heard a saying that said You can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pocket. Good leaders know they are going to have to get a little dirt on their hands. I don’t have to tell you this but success in a family organization takes effort and a lot of hard work. So take some time out each day and get dirty with your family.
Getting dirty does not always mean you make a mess but it does mean we are taking action. I know many times in my life I have been parenting with my hands in my pockets. We truly build relationships when we take our hands out of our pockets and put them into action. Go out today and get your hands dirty with your family and be the family leader they need.
